Vice President, Youth Programs

The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) is currently seeking a full-time Vice President of Youth Programs to lead the Institute's youth initiatives. 

JGI works to protect Great Apes and their habitats by combining conservation, research and education with assistance to local communities.  Its youth programs are designed to build a worldwide network of young people who are taking action to care for the environment, animals and human communities. 

The Vice President of Youth Programs will be responsible for the development and growth of the Institute's Roots & Shoots program.  Roots & Shoots engages young people in projects in their local communities that help people, animals and the environment, and connects them with similarly engaged young people worldwide.   The VP Youth Programs will also oversee the implementation of the Jane Goodall Global Youth Summit, an annual gathering of committed young people from many countries.  With a US staff of 20, and a budget of $2.3 million, JGI's youth programs link groups in more than 90 countries, and are poised to continue their rapid expansion.
 
The ideal candidate will have:

  • Love for animals and the natural world
  • A passionate belief that young people can change the world for the better
  • At least eight years of leadership experience with programs involving youth
  • A record of fundraising success, including cultivation of major donors
  • The ability to develop and execute strategic initiatives
  • Experience managing large budgets
  • The ability to lead a diverse team of staff and volunteers
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills
  • Comfort with rapid change
  • A sense of humor

Major Gifts & Special Projects, Manager

Responsibilities:

  • Manage cultivation cycles and stewardship program for all portfolio donors and prospects
  • Manage timely, personalized acknowledgement process, benefits fulfillment, special cultivation events, and moves management system
  • Assist with development, assignment and implementation of strategies for cultivation and gift closure
  • Prepare written materials, including special correspondence and solicitation materials 
  • Assist with strategy and planning for the Major Gifts team and Legacy Campaign

Qualifications:

  • A flexible work schedule, including some evenings, weekends, and moderate to heavy domestic and international travel
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and organizational skills with attention to detail
  • High level of competency with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, and database programs
  • Demonstrated leadership with the ability to multi-task and to set priorities, and a patient listener with an excellent sense of humor
  • Previous management experience and knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets and estates is helpful, but not required

Foundation Relations, Manager

Responsibilities:

  • To oversee all foundation funding for JGI
  • To work closely with JGI's mission programs to prospect, solicit, author, secure, track, and report on foundation grants.  This includes:
    • Working with programs to identify key prospects and craft winning proposals
    • Significant research, grant writing and submission responsibilities
    • Ensuring all compliance and reporting requirements for foundation funding are met
  • To manage current foundation funding portfolio and develop new foundation revenue streams with a focus on Roots & Shoots (JGI's youth environmental program) and unrestricted funding.
  • To develop and steward critical foundation relationships with high-level contacts. 
  • To work cross-divisionally to implement systems and standards for funding requests.
  • To act as a central point-person for all foundation funding for JGI and as clearinghouse for all grant activity and records; to maintain complete foundation files for organization.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5 years' experience in foundation funding for a non-profit organization
  • Proven track record in successful grant writing
  • Strong interpersonal communication and PC skills essential

Research and Media Relations Manager

The Jane Goodall Institute's mission is to inspire and empower people to take informed, compassionate action to make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment. We are an international non-profit organization whose primary focus is primate care and research, environmental and humanitarian education, and community-centered conservation.

We are currently seeking a full-time Research and Media Relations Manager for our Public Policy Program who will report to the Vice President for Public Policy.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Assist the VP in carrying out strategic plan on legislative priorities before the U.S. Congress, particularly in the area of appropriations.
  • Help research, write and update JGI's issue briefs and other policy related documents.
  • Draft press releases in connection with public policy news and events.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with media outlets interested in public policy.
  • Develop and maintain a public policy email newsletter.
  • Assist with writing reports to funders on Public Policy department accomplishments.
  • Perform research and develop responses to public policy inquiries and requests from members, partner organizations and others.
  • Assist the VP with preparation of written and visual materials for presentations to the board and to congressional members and staff.
  • Oversee legislative action alerts and policy issue updates to the JGI web site.
  • Assemble existing polling data and assist with development of additional poll to fill gaps in knowledge of how the public views the organization's issues.
  • Track critical legislation.
  • Provide assistance to VP as requested.

The successful candidate will possess the following:

  • Minimum of 4 years' experience working in the legislative branch of the U.S. government, either in a press office or as staff of a congressional member or committee.
  • Familiarity with the federal budget and appropriations process.
  • Bachelor's degree, especially in communications or biological sciences.  Law degree a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.  Knowledge of HTML a plus.
