The Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots & Shoots program is unique in its approach to youth empowerment. Through our Youth Leadership Councils and youth-directed community service projects, we provide opportunities for outstanding young people to hone their communication, planning and leadership skills. The Roots & Shoots Graduate Fellowship takes this aspect of our program to a new level.

The Roots & Shoots Graduate Fellow works with the Roots & Shoots College and University Programs Manager and the Youth Fellow to provide very important representation and outreach at Roots & Shoots and Jane Goodall Institute events. For the Graduate Fellow representation and outreach opportunities mainly focus on events that relate to College and University students. Beyond these outreach responsibilities, the Graduate Fellow also assists in the day to day operation and programming of the Roots & Shoots College and University Program. This work includes mentoring newly formed College and University groups of Roots & Shoots, as well as supporting current groups and supporting the College Leadership Council. This position offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at a fast-growing nonprofit organization, as well as the opportunity to effect lasting change on an evolving program.

Responsibilities

  1. Act as a key spokesperson for Roots & Shoots at events and functions. Specific projects include:
    • Be available as speaker and trainer for Roots & Shoots College and University Programs and the Roots & Shoots Youth Leadership Initiative.
    • Travel to national events or conferences that require a strong Roots & Shoots spokesperson or workshop leader.
    • Travel nationally, to colleges and universities that require a Roots & Shoots speaker or presenter.
  2. Give presentations and workshops to college students and professors interested in establishing Roots & Shoots on their college campuses.
  3. Engage and foster Colleges and Universities in the Roots & Shoots network.
  4. Support existing College and University Roots & Shoots groups in their projects and community service work.
  5. Act as a support person for the Youth Leadership Initiative, primarily the College Leadership Council, including facilitating, recruiting, training and mentoring members throughout the year.
  6. Act as a youth advisor and communications liaison for our program, collecting ideas and feedback from youth leaders, college students and the entire Roots & Shoots network on initiatives, national and local program needs and continuously transmitting ideas back to Roots & Shoots staff on national and regional levels.
  7. Manage other projects and events that emerge during the Fellowship from national program goals and priorities. These might include additional media, event or initiative planning, public policy work and additional travel.
  8. Assist the Youth Fellow and Roots & Shoots staff to plan and implement the Youth Leadership Initiative Training and Orientation Retreat.
  9. Work with the Roots & Shoots College and University staff to plan and implement outreach events when needed.
  10. Assist Roots & Shoots staff to produce ongoing College and University Newsletters, featuring college aged Roots & Shoots groups nationally and globally.

Qualifications

  • Recent College Graduate (no more than one year beyond undergraduate degree) – All majors and concentrations welcomed.
  • Previous leadership experience required. Roots & Shoots leadership experience preferred.
  • Commitment to the mission of Roots & Shoots and the Jane Goodall Institute
  • High energy

The Graduate Fellow will be paid a monthly stipend of $1,000 in addition to a $400 monthly housing stipend (a total of $1,400 per month).

Roots & Shoots Intern, National Office

Roots & Shoots®, a program of the Jane Goodall Institute, seeks one full-time intern for our National Office. Founded by Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE and a group of Tanzanian students, the global Roots & Shoots program is about empowering young people to take action through service-learning projects—effecting positive change for people, animals and the environment.

Roots & Shoots interns assist the National Office staff with the day-to-day administration of the Roots & Shoots program, including member services, program marketing, website maintenance and some outreach. While many of the interns' duties are administrative, these positions offer a unique behind-the-scenes look at a fast-growing nonprofit organization, as well as the opportunity to effect lasting change on an evolving program. Interns work closely with one another and as part of a dynamic team of individuals who share a commitment to high-quality work.


Intern responsibilities include:

  • Serving as the first line of contact for general program information requests by phone, mail, email and fax (high volume of email correspondence)
  • Distributing materials via mail, email or fax, as needed
  • Archiving news articles and images
  • Requesting and tracking media releases for photos submitted by Roots & Shoots groups
  • Taking notes at monthly staff meetings
  • Attending weekly check-in meetings with the Roots & Shoots National Office team
  • Reviewing and approving Project Reports received from members through the website
  • Facilitating membership fulfillment through database maintenance
  • Assisting in the design and implementation of the program's membership plan, as needed
  • Interacting with the public and representing the program at events, as needed (potential for participation in Dr. Goodall's lecture tour events)
  • Writing content for Roots & Shoots newsletter, eNewsletter and website (approximately one piece of writing each month)
  • Administering interactive, member-based website to ensure quality and usability
  • Providing phone coverage, on a rotating basis, to JGI's receptionist two days each week

The successful candidates will possess:

The internship requires a minimum 4-month full-time commitment (six months preferred) and provides a $1,000 (USD) monthly stipend, as well as a $50 (USD) monthly D.C. Metro allowance. Hours are full-time, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday (with some flexibility). Work will be based out of the Roots & Shoots National Office in Arlington, Virginia (Ballston Metro). Communications Internship – Image/Footage Archive

Founded by renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, JGI is a global nonprofit that empowers people to make a difference for all living things. We are creating healthy ecosystems, promoting sustainable livelihoods and nurturing new generations of committed, active citizens around the world.  The Archive plays a vital role in the organization to convey and promote the mission of JGI to the public and the media. It also supplies content for internal and global JGI publications, and creates much needed revenue via its licensing function.  Interns gain valuable, hands-on experience in all aspects of a footage/image library and get a behind-the-scenes look at a small, but growing, nonprofit organization. The work is challenging and dynamic. You will work with top level professionals in all phases of media and entertainment globally.

There is also opportunity to create promotional clips for JGI and the web using our footage management and editing station.

Duties:

  • Maintaining and updating Dr. Goodall/JGI’s electronic image library
  • Organizing the photo and slide archives
  • Editing and selecting photographic images
  • Uploading footage/images to the online content management system
  • Providing photos and creative support for JGI publications and projects
  • Handling licensing and permissions requests by phone, mail, email and fax
  • Coordinating duplication services for various video and digital formats

Membership and Marketing Intern

The Jane Goodall Institute's Development Department is seeking an intern to assist us with various fundraising initiatives and with the day-to-day administration of membership and marketing. While many of the intern's duties are administrative, this position offers a unique behind the scenes look at an international wildlife research, conservation and education not-for-profit.

Intern responsibilities include:

Africa Programs Intern

Work on our creative team to conserve wildlife in Tanzania, Uganda, Guinea and the Congo Basin. Interns provide day to day administrative support, carry out small library and Internet research projects, assist with public outreach projects, and process information requests. While many of the intern's duties are administrative, this position offers a unique behind the scenes look at an international wildlife research, conservation and education not-for-profit.

Applicants must have a BA or equivalent degree. Preference will be given to individuals with knowledge of African primate conservation, environmental education, community conservation/sustainable development programs and the commercial bushmeat trade.

Chimpanzee Intern

The ChimpanZoo Program consists of professionals and volunteers who conduct behavioral research on captive chimpanzees and strive to improve chimpanzees' living conditions. A limited number of internship positions are available at the ChimpanZoo office. Although funding is not available for ChimpanZoo interns, academic credit can be arranged for students who wish to study chimpanzee behavior while taking part in a research project. Only individuals interested in chimpanzee research are accepted. Applications will be judged on the merit of the proposed research project.
