Position Summary:
The major responsibilities of the position are to: 
  • Ensure the quality of ongoing research initiatives especially data quality, consistent identification of individuals and inter-observer reliability
  • Satisfy the grant requirements for various ongoing projects
  • Write monthly and annual reports detailing research activities at the Centre
  • Conduct own research on approved topics consistent with the aims of the long term research program
  • Ensure that team work spirit is cultivated and enhanced
  • Promote the research program to local and central governments, local communities, and donors
  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:  Ph.D. in Primatology or a related field

Skills/ Experiences:

    • Excellent field research and data collection skills
    • Ability to hike for long days in rugged and sometimes hazardous terrain
    • Excellent communication skills
    • An impressive record of research
    • Proficiency in Kiswahili, or readiness to learn it will be an essential requirement.

National Coordinator, Roots & Shoots

 JGI-Canada seeks an National Coordinator for its education program, Roots & Shoots, in Canada.  The National Coordinator is responsible for developing and implementing the strategic direction for the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada’s Roots & Shoots program.  This individual will provide strong vision and leadership to the program, manage a small team, develop productive partnerships with other youth organizations, and become directly involved in the hands-on implementation of youth workshops and campaigns. The coordinator is also responsible for the marketing of the program, and for developing and managing the resources required to support it.

Duties and Responsibilities

Program Management
• In cooperation with JGI Canada’s Roots & Shoots board committee, evaluate the Institute’s current educational and youth engagement initiatives, and develop and implement new and/or revised strategies that will expand the reach of the Roots & Shoots program and deliver measurable results in terms of youth action and engagement in their communities. 
• Represent the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada on environmental education issues related to sustainable living, learning and engagement. 
• Facilitate workshops/deliver presentations to educators to increase recognition of and capacity for project-based, learner-driven action.
• Coordinate the delivery of a series of Youth for Action workshops across Canada.
• Develop partnerships with other organizations that will complement the Institute’s strategic priorities. 

Administration
• Prepare strategic plan and annual work plans, and manage the Roots & Shoots budget.  
• In cooperation with the Executive Director, recruit, train and evaluate Roots & Shoots staff. 
• Develop and implement a national and regional organizational structure that will support the growth of the Roots & Shoots network.
• Provide regular reports on the operation and progress of the Roots & Shoots program to the Executive Director and Board of Directors

Fundraising
• Develop and implement an effective fundraising strategy for the Roots & Shoots program
• Actively solicit funds in support of the program, from major donors, foundations and corporations, including the preparation of proposals and the management of donor stewardship through regular reporting.

Marketing and Outreach
• In cooperation with the Executive Director, develop and implement a comprehensive marketing plan for the program, including the creation and production of promotional materials
• Promote Roots & Shoots within the formal and informal education sectors through workshops or displays at relevant conferences.
• Coordinate special events such as workshops and conferences to reward and re-energise Roots & Shoots members, build youth leadership capacity and raise the profile of the Roots & Shoots program
 

Job Requirements
• A degree in education, environmental sciences/studies or a relevant area.
• Well-developed knowledge of environmental issues and their inter-relationships with social justice
• An excellent understanding of the principles of youth engagement.
• 5 years teaching experience, preferably in an informal environmental education capacity
• At least 2 years experience supervising other staff, and in project management and program development.
• Excellent research, analytical, communication and organisational skills
• Highly developed computer skills including data management and presentation applications
• Fluency in French and English would be a tremendous asset, as would a demonstrated affinity with the principles of the Jane Goodall Institute.

Job Description:

  • To supervise and assist in the construction of enclosures and holding facilities for orphaned chimpanzees in a remote location in Congo-Brazzaville.
  • To assist in general maintenance programs for buildings and equipment already in place at the sanctuary
  • To assist in the training of maintenance personnel in cyclic maintenance programs

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in management of construction sites and construction teams.
  • Fluent in French and English
  • Has basic understanding of alternative technology such as solar energy and electric fencing

Worldwide Volunteer Positions:

Roots & Shoots Volunteer

Status: Minimum 6 month commitment preferred. Volunteer commitments of less than 3 months will not be considered. Start dates-mid-April and mid-October (exceptions considered) Applications accepted on a rolling basis.

Job Description:
• Support local R&S clubs through attending club meetings, assisting with project creation and implementation, and making educational presentations. Successful projects have included: cleaning beaches and schoolyards, bird watching, tree planting, creating school gardens, visiting orphanages and hospitals, field trips to natural areas, and campaigns to raise awareness of local environmental and social issues such as HIV/AIDS and bushmeat.
• Represent R&S in the local community through conducting presentations, teaching workshops, exhibiting at a community event, visiting new schools who are interested in joining the program, or participating in partner organization’s events.
• Aid in the planning, preparation and implementation of annual R&S events such as International Peace Day, African Child Day, and Roots & Shoots week.
• Develop and implement a volunteer project in collaboration with local R&S groups.
• Assist with on-going projects such at the Yatima R&S scholarship program which sponsors 25 orphaned children to attend secondary school.
• Assist with general office administrative tasks

Experience/Qualifications:
• Experience in one or more of the following areas: Roots & Shoots, community development, teaching, sciences, conservation, event planning, grant writing, computers/technology, administrative support
• The ideal volunteer will be mature, flexible, self-motivated, adapt to new environments easily, willing to work hard, culturally sensitive, have a sense of humor, and willing to do whatever tasks need to be done
• Experience working in Africa or a developing country a plus
• Must be 21 years of age or older

NOTE: For those with significant Africa experience, including conversational Kiswahili, opportunities in the Moshi/Arusha and Iringa Regions are available

Volunteer contributes to the Jane Goodall Institute: $2,900 for six months and $350 for every additional month.  A six month minimum is required and start dates are April and October.

Curriculum Development Volunteer

JGI Uganda is currently looking for self motivated individual to assist in the development of an Environmental Education Teachers Guide for lower primary (5-7 year olds).  The placement is for 4-6 months, starting any time after July 2008.

This person should have taught lower primary classes and preferably have curriculum development experience.

The volunteer will be required to contribute between US$1,300 - $1,900, dependant on length of placement.
