Objectives:
Education & Engaging Youth:

The implementation of environmental education programs within local communities that have limited access to such information are an effective way for conservationists to reinforce the long-term success of their initiatives. In areas of conservation concern, it is not uncommon to find children who have never experienced the beauty or wonder of their own national treasures. Children who lack a direct connection to wildlife and those who have learned to see wildlife as crop raiders or nuisances to be controlled, often do not fully appreciate the importance of conservation goals.

Educating children at an early age to understand and appreciate the interconnectedness and importance of all living things can have a positive effect on children’s values and foster a deep appreciation and concern for their surrounding environment. Environmental education programs both encourage youth to appreciate the value of all living things and provide the tools needed to build a firm foundation for future involvement in initiatives that aim to benefit both the environment and human communities.

Roots & Shoots, JGI’s environmental and humanitarian education for youth, seeks to foster respect and compassion for all living things, promote an understanding of all cultures and beliefs, and inspire each individual to take action in order to make the world a better place for the environment, animals and the human community. JGI’s Africa Programs are committed to engaging local communities in the conservation process within our project areas. The establishment of Roots & Shoots groups within these areas is an important way to involve communities and educate youth on the value of conservation while building a sustainable future.
