Partnerships: Pan African Sanctuary Alliance (PASA)

PASA member sanctuaries are committed to providing the best possible facilities and care to captive African primates in Africa, while working towards the protection and conservation of the species in the wild.

PASA is an alliance of 16 primate sanctuaries from all over Africa that is working toward addressing the needs of current sanctuaries and promoting educational initiatives within communities to reduce harmful environmental and hunting practices.

JGI was very influential in the creation of PASA. The alliance was founded in 2000 at a workshop organized by JGI-Uganda and the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG) in Entebbe. Since then, annual meetings have focused on the key issues facing sanctuaries including education, conservation, reintroduction, veterinary care, and breeding.

A PASA sanctuary provides a safe and secure home for African apes and other primates in need. The welfare of the individual and the preservation of the species are of prime importance and are considered equally. The sanctuary operates in the context of an integrated approach to conservation which can include rehabilitation and reintroduction.
