Jane Visits the Department of Interior
Last Friday Jane made a quick stop in Washington, DC to visit the U.S. Department of the Interior and give a lecture to department employees and other invited guests. Secretary Ken Salazar was a gracious host to Jane as she spoke to a packed auditorium of 700 people. In her remarks Jane said, "I am pleased to be speaking to so many people who have an impact on policy not just in Washington but around the world."
Titled "Conservation and Communities: The Shifting Paradigm of International Conservation," the lecture gave Jane an opportunity to not only share information about JGI's community-centered programs but also news about her recent travels to South America. She also shared her thoughts about the importance of the United Nations climate change conference being held in Copenhagen next month. It was a great opportunity for Jane to engage in a conversation with decision makers about modern global conservation practices. You can hear part of the speech here.
To Jane's surprise, Jane was also awarded the first-ever Secretary's Lifetime Achievement Award by Mr. Salazar. "She has been a key figure representing the connection between people and nature to communities," Mr. Salazar said upon presenting Jane the award.

Jane visits Pierce Brosnan
While Jane was in California last week to accept the Minerva Award at Maria Shriver's Women's Conference, she took a few moments to catch up with an old friend. Pierce Brosnan, the actor and environmentalist who needs no introduction, has been Jane's friend and a JGI supporter for many years.
Jane's primary reason to be in California was to promote Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots program. Jane spoke at Viewpoint School, and together with Pierce visited a water garden in Calabasas to learn about a restoration project near the Los Angeles River.
