The Death of Glitter’s Baby

In July 2011, Glitter became a mom for the first time. However, not long after the birth, Gremlin, Glitter’s mother, took Glitter’s infant and began carrying, nursing, and otherwise providing all necessary care for the baby.
After six months of care from her grandmother, Glitter’s baby passed away on the night of January 20, 2012. Glitter’s baby looked healthy not long before she died. However, four days before her death, the baby’s condition began to deteriorate rapidly. She cried constantly and had difficulties clinging to her grandmother.
On the morning of January 21, 2012, Gremlin descended from her nest holding the lifeless baby. For three days after the death, Gremlin continued to care for and travel with the baby’s body.
JGI staff members have recovered the infant’s body, so we hope to learn what caused the baby’s sudden death.

I feel so bad for Glitter...
I feel so bad for Glitter... :( .... hasn't Gremlin taken other children that have belong to her daughter before? Could this be the reason for the infant's death? I feel very sorry for Gremlin also; because you know she loved the baby very much.., but I think the larger question is why does she keep taking Glitter's babies? From what I read when Glitter leaves to have her babies she is good mother..... I study human behavior, and this is very common..... Is this yet another behavior that brings us closer to our distant relatives??? Just a thought... Another thing I noticed here were the responses from people... Only a few said poor Glitter ...while the mass felt very sorry for Gremlin... This to is the same with humans...Maybe Gremlin needs the attention she receives when she is holding the infants... Does she have milk? Are they passing away due to hunger? I would love to know the results... This is such an interesting connection between human behavior and chimpanzee behavior.....

How sad. It would be fascinating to find out why the infant died and if its possible that Gremlin knew of the infant's condition from the birth. I wonder if she took over raising the baby to use her grandmotherly wisdom to tend to a sickly infant or to take the horror of an infant's death from Glitter. Please post your thoughts. Thanks.
