Foraging Frodo

Monday, June 4, 2012 - 10:02am

JGI’s Deus Mjungu reports on the Gombe chimpanzees’ latest adventures.

The chimpanzee diet includes a great deal of fruit. For the past two months, however, the fruit supply in the Kasekela chimpanzees' range has been far from plentiful. As a result, the chimpanzees are traveling in small groups or on their own to minimize competition for food.

Like most of the other males, Frodo has been traveling alone.  He has also been making frequent visits to the staff housing area . Even though there's not a lot to eat in this area at the moment, much like the rest of the Kasekela range, Frodo prefers to stay near the staff houses.  For the past two weeks or so, he's been in this area continuously.

This just in: Deus today reported that Glitter has given birth. Watch this space for details.
