At Tchimpounga, the staff do their best to care for the more than 150 chimpanzees living at the Jane Goodall Institute sanctuary. Ongoing veterinary attention and constant assessments of their diet ensure that all the chimps are in good condition.
Some chimpanzees, like little Mambo, survive because of the love of amazing caregivers like Cristel. Cristel is an expert at bringing these small chimpanzees back from serious illnesses and deep depressions caused by the cruel loss of their mothers at the hands of poachers.
With her magical and charismatic personality, everyone at Tchimpounga knows that Cristel is very special, particularly to the chimpanzees. When she cleans their wounds, feeds them or takes their temperatures, she speaks in a hushed voice The chimpanzees seem to understand her and appreciate the love in every whisper.
Mambou and Cristel have a very strong emotional bond. When Cristel arrives each morning, Mambou is one of the first chimpanzees to raise his hands and ask for Cristel to hold him so he can feel her warmth.
