Jane Goodall's Global Birthday Celebration

This year, Jane will celebrate yet another milestone:  her 80th birthday.  Many people have asked her about gifts, parties or other celebratory events.  She doesn’t want any of that.  Her wishes are quite simple. “The best birthday present I could have is to give all the Tchimpounga chimpanzees their freedom, and to have young people all around the globe do projects that make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment.”

FAQs with Jane: What can I do if I want to work with animals?

Dr. Jane talks about the best ways you can follow your dreams to work in whatever field you want. The most important thing she says is to pursue higher education, and to speak with people in the field and ask them to tell their story of how they pursued their own career. If you want to work with animals contact people in your community who work with animals such as veterinarians, staff at local animal shelters or zoos and ask them to tell you their story.

FAQs with Jane: What is the most interesting thing you learned about chimpanzees and from them?

The most interesting thing Dr. Jane learned about the chimpanzees is just how similar they are to humans biologically and behaviorally. In this video, Dr. Jane tells us how we are different from them.

FAQs with Jane: Are you a vegetarian?

Dr. Jane is indeed a vegetarian. She became a vegetarian after reading about intensive farming, not knowing about what the animals actually went through. The next time she looked at a piece of meat, Dr. Jane thought, this symbolizes fear, pain and death.
