The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) applauded today’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) announcement that could greatly expand protection of chimpanzees, including the thousands of chimpanzees currently held captive in the United States.
 
The United States has long recognized wild chimpanzees as endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) but has not provided the same level of protection for chimpanzees held captive in this country.   Because other U.S.

Threats to chimpanzees have increased since the 1990 listing of wild populations as endangered 

Following additional legal determinations about the application of the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today announced a proposal to classify both wild and captive chimpanzees as endangered.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) announced a proposal to protect all chimpanzees under the Endangered Species Act. While wild chimpanzees have long been recognized as endangered, existing regulations deprive captive chimpanzees in the United States of protection under the ESA.

Jane and JGI-Canada Board Member Named Top 100 Guardian Angels of the Planet.

Over the weekend, Jane and Simon Jackson, a member of the Jane Goodall Institute-Canada board and founder of The Spirit Bear Youth Coalition, were listed among the Top 100 Guardian Angels of the Planet by the French group Founding Congress for the World Green Games.  The Top 100 Guardian Angels of the Planet are recognized for empowering children to care for the environment.

International Travel: Jane in Italy

On June 2, 2013, Jane met with a choir of 800 children in Perugia, Italy, in the city’s Piazza IV Novembre. Throughout the school year, the children took part in Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots and studied Jane’s life and work.

International Travel: Jane in Nature

In May, Jane had the chance to see the bluebells in the Foret de Soignes in Brussels, Belgium. There for a “glorious” two days, she said that the area brought her back to her childhood in Bournemouth, England.

Perugia, Italy: the Theatre Morlacchi

Dr. Jane Goodall will be in Perugia on June 2nd, 2013 at 9:00 PM for a stage performance at the Theatre Morlacchi. In this live show, Dr. Jane Goodall will be recalling her life accompanied by musicians Gabriele Mirabassi and Wolfang Neitzer. This show is in collboration with "Comune Di Perugia" and the "Regional Agency for Environmental Conservation"

Dr. Jane Goodall will meet with a choir of 800 children in Perugia, Italy, on June 2, 2013, at 4:00 p.m. in Piazza IV Novembre . Throughout the school year, these children have participated in Jane Goodall Roots & Shoots and studied the life and works of Dr. Jane Goodall. The choir will be directed by Francesca Rossi who will present the album "Worms, Chickens, Chimpanzees" by Egea Small. This genuine music and lyrics are about the English scientist. 

Terni, Italy: ARPA

Dr. Jane Goodall will be in Terni at ARPA on June 1st, 2013 at 5:00 PM to meet 500 students from the "Face to Face with Jane Goodall" schools.
