Dr. Jane Reflects on Last Year's Boston Marathon Tragedy

A year ago the world was shocked to hear of the horrific bombing at the finishing line of the Boston Marathon. Senseless and cruel. All the joy and fun and sense of achievement were, in one moment, changed to fear, pain and anguish. And, as the number of dead and wounded became clear, grief. And anger.

Patrick Downes, the nephew of a close friend of mine and his new wife Jess, were among the victims, caught in the blast. Each lost a leg. Each went through a long series of painful operations.

Summer 2013 Travel Blog: Jane Travels to Alaska with Disneynature to Witness Bears in the Wilderness

Last summer, Jane had the opportunity to travel to Alaska, a place where she has always wanted to visit.  Jane’s trip to Alaska was for the filming of the new Disneynature movie, “Bears”, showcasing the life of two mother bears and their young cubs. Jane had an amazing time visiting Alaska’s national parks, observing bears in the wild and experiencing the natural beauty Alaska has to offer.

Introduction to the “Seeds of Hope” Blog Series

Any book can only be so many pages, and the world of plants is ever-evolving.  With this in mind, now that “Seeds of Hope: Wisdom and Wonder from the World of Plants” is scheduled for publication in April, I want to create a dialogue and share more stories about trees and plants, and, perhaps most importantly, discuss ways that you can help protect them.

Informing Collective Management of Private Forests in Uganda using GFW and Mobile Mapping Technologies

The Global Forest Watch (GFW) platform presents a unique opportunity to strengthen the work of the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) in protecting chimpanzees and their habitats in Africa.  In this blog I would like to share how JGI and partners are building capacity to eventually use Global Forest Watch in combination with mobile technologies to improve forest monitoring in Uganda.

The Budongo and Bugoma Forest Reserves in western Uganda are home to an estimated 1,157 chimpanzees.
