Dr. Lilian Pintea, the Jane Goodall Institute’s (JGI) vice president of Conservation Science, recently reported from Goma, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where JGI is leading a workshop. The Conservation Action Plan (CAP) workshop is the first in a series of meetings planned to identify strategies and actions to reduce the threats to great apes and their habitat in a critical landscape of the eastern DRC. The CAP will target more than 66 million acres, which contain approximately 15,000 chimpanzees and somewhere between 3,000-5,000 gorillas.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has confirmed that an aging colony of former research chimpanzees will not be returned to biomedical research for the time being. The 186 chimpanzees, which have lived free from invasive research for the past ten years while housed at a facility in Alamogordo, New Mexico, were to be moved this year to an active biomedical research laboratory in San Antonio, Texas.
Chimpanzees at Gombe National Park in Tanzania often become animated during rainstorms and around waterfalls.
A recent behavioral study conducted by Duke University at two African great ape sanctuaries, including the Jane Goodall Institute’s Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of Congo, investigated how chimpanzees and bonobos make decisions when faced with different options. The study’s findings indicate that, similar to humans, the two species are more apt to gamble when they know the odds than when they do not.
