JGI and Partners Move to the Next Stage to Develop an Unprecedented Chimpanzee Habitat Monitoring System

In 2012, JGI set the ambitious 30-year goal of protecting with partners chimpanzees in countries that currently cover 85 percent of chimpanzees and their habitats in Africa. One of chimpanzees’ greatest threats is the loss of their habitat. As human populations expand, so too do their need for resources, which in turn threatens forests and woodlands where chimpanzees live.

Laudable Lemba

Lemba is an amazing chimpanzee.  Despite her physical limitations, Lemba performs exercises every day during the games Tchimpounga’s caregivers have created for her.  The games help restore her agility and arm strength.  We can learn so much from Lemba!

Ape Surveys and Distribution Modeling

Informing conservation strategies and monitoring success

JGI’s Applied Conservation Science Program provides the detailed census data that is essential to conservation planning and assessment. To be effective, the conservation community needs to know the distribution, status and trends of great ape populations. Identification of human threats in specific landscapes is also critical.
