Jamaica Pond, MA: Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace

Sep 19 2010

Founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall and a group of Tanzanian students, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program is about young people making positive change happen for communities, for animals and for the environment we all share. With hundreds of thousands of young people in more than 120 countries, the Roots & Shoots network connects youth of all ages who share a desire to create a better world.

The Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace is observed across the globe. For the third year in a row, the Roots & Shoots New England office will be celebrating at Jamaica Pond, a beautiful park located in the heart of Boston. Working with local Roots & Shoots youth members, local non-violence organizations, faith groups and locally owned companies, the event will be a celebration full of peace-focused activities, learning and opportunities for action.

This year’s “Passport to Peace” activities will include: creating video pledges for peace; making peace dove puppets to fly in a Day of Peace procession around the pond; and signing the Martin Luther King Jr. Pledge of Nonviolence. Talia Rivera, part of the launch team for Boston Rising, will share a few words about her life and her hope for tomorrow. Boston Rising is a new organization working to engage and mobilize the next generation of business leaders and philanthropists to the issues of urban poverty.

When: Sunday, September 19, 2010, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Where: Jamaica Pond Boathouse (corner of Jamaicaway and Pond St.), Jamaica Plain, Mass.

Who: Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots groups and community members of all ages are invited to celebrate the 2010 Roots & Shoots International Day of Peace.

Please note that Dr. Goodall will not be present at this event.
