JGI awards global leaders at 30th anniversary bicoastal events

On September 28, in Los Angeles, and October 10, in Washington, D.C., Jane Goodall presented the first annual Jane Goodall Global Leadership Awards to former Tanzanian President William Mkapa, US Senator Patrick Leahy, Ted Turner and others sharing her vision and commitment to making a positive difference in the world.

Exclusive, eco-friendly bicoastal events were held to recognize the award recipients, celebrate the Institute's 30th anniversary, and directly benefit JGI's programs in primate research, conservation and development and youth education and leadership.

The Jane Goodall Global Leadership Awards went to:

  • His Excellency, President Benjamin Mkapa, for Global Leadership
  • The Honorable Patrick Leahy, for Excellence in Public Policy
  • Ted Turner, for Responsible Activism in Media and Entertainment
  • Chase Pickering, for Youth Leadership
  • Patagonia, Inc., for Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility

A posthumous award went to Gretchen Wyler, the late animal welfare activist and president of the Ark Trust, Inc.

Ed Begley, Jr., star of stage and screen and leading Hollywood environmental activist, was the emcee for the Los Angeles event on Friday, Sept., 28, at the California Science Center's Wallis Annenberg Building.

Jeff Corwin, wildlife biologist and Emmy Award-winning television host, was the emcee at the Washington, DC event on Wednesday, Oct., 10 at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium. Animal Planet audiences best know Jeff from “The Jeff Corwin Experience,” and “Corwin’s Quest,” two of the most popular shows on cable television.

Both events provided a unique atmosphere with the ambiance enhanced by environmentally friendly decorations and traditional African music. Guests enjoyed vegetarian and organic cuisine and a live auction to support the efforts of the Institute. Items varied from unique artwork to a trip to Africa.

The galas served to not only celebrate the past efforts of those who have contributed to the Jane Goodall Institute, but also to celebrate the future endeavors of the organization in the years to come.
