Jane Goodall's Roots & Shoots Launches One Million Hours of Service Campaign

Today, Tuesday, October 25, Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots team proudly launches the 2011-2012 Global Youth Campaign, One Million Hours of Service.

The One Million Hours of Service campaign aims to do the following:

  • Increase involvement of current and new Roots & Shoots members;
  • Recognize groups for their incredible service projects ; and
  • Spread awareness locally and globally through the voices of youth and their projects.

How This Year’s Campaign Works

The powerful mission of this year’s campaign is to see the Roots & Shoots global network collectively record one million hours of service. Groups will be able to log projects and hours on the campaign website and see their work counted toward the ultimate goal. The website will feature a thermometer to track total hours and an interactive map to feature groups around the world.

In preparation for today’s launch, the Roots & Shoots team has created and organized valuable resources to assist groups with project development and tracking. These resources are available on the campaign website and include project “how-to” guides and media/marketing tools.

Developed by Roots & Shoots youth leaders, this year’s campaign is the fifth youth-led effort of its kind. Past campaigns mobilized thousands of Roots & Shoots members around the world and had a measurable impact on individuals, groups and communities at large.

Keeping with the Roots & Shoots mission to better the world for humans, animals and the environment, the One Million Hours of Service campaign will encourage and celebrate all types of service. The campaign also reflects one of Dr. Goodall’s most powerful messages -- inspiring all people to realize that every individual and every hour of service make a difference.

One Million Hours of Service Campaign Winners

Groups that reach benchmark hours will be formally recognized by the Roots & Shoots team. While some will be featured on the website, those that log the greatest number of hours will have the opportunity to speak with Dr. Goodall via Skype and to receive a visit from the current Roots & Shoots Youth Leadership Fellow, Adrienne Birmingham.
