Make a Difference on World Environment Day!
This Sunday, June 5, marks World Environment Day (WED). Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), WED is a global day to take positive action on behalf of the environment.
This year’s theme for WED is “Forests: Nature at Your Service.” Forests clean and store our water, provide homes and livelihoods to more than 1.6 billion people around the world and help slow climate change by storing carbon. Forests are also home to innumerable plant and animal species, including chimpanzees and other endangered great apes. Learn more about forests and what you can do to protect them.
There are a number of ways you can celebrate WED on Sunday.
- Check out what’s happening with Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, the Jane Goodall Institute’s (JGI) global environmental and humanitarian youth program.
- Support UNEP’s World Environment Day Challenge. For this WED, who can rally more people to take action to plant a new forest: Don Cheadle or Gisele Bündchen?
- Sign JGI’s petition urging your representatives to support legislation to discourage the illegal commercial bushmeat trade and other destructive activities, such as irresponsible logging and mining practices, that contribute to it.
Happy World Environment Day!
