To Speak at U.S. Summit for Global Citizen Diplomacy

Arlington, Virginia– November 9, 2010 — Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, the Jane Goodall Institute’s global environmental and humanitarian youth program, announced today that Pippa Biddle, the 2010 Roots & Shoots Youth Leadership Fellow, will address the U.S. Summit and Initiative for Global Citizen Diplomacy at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, November 17, 2010.

Biddle will speak about the future of citizen diplomacy—particularly among today’s youth—at the opening session of the three-day event, which takes place from November 16-19, 2010. Other notable speakers at the session include Mary Jean Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Harriet Fulbright, wife of former U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright (D-Ark.).

The Summit is a product of a partnership between the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy (USCCD) and the U.S. Department of State Office of Public Diplomacy & Public Affairs. The Summit’s goal is to help resolve major global challenges by encouraging American citizens of all ages to engage in international activities at home and abroad. By 2020, the Summit hopes to increase the number of American volunteers from 60 million today to 120 million.

“The projects Roots & Shoots groups undertake in their communities are exactly what this Summit hopes to encourage, and Pippa Biddle is the perfect example of a global youth leader and citizen diplomat,” said Allison Deines, national director of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots. “For nearly 20 years, the Roots & Shoots program has  empowered young people from all over the globe to come together to make our world a better place. We are humbled by the invitation to participate in this important event and are proud to have Pippa share our views on the future and importance of citizen diplomacy.”

Roots & Shoots was invited to send a representative to the Summit because of the program’s ongoing efforts to connect youth around the globe. Biddle was selected by the Jane Goodall Institute and renowned primatologist and conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall to serve as the Roots & Shoots Youth Leadership Fellow for 2010-2011. In this position, Biddle is responsible for leading the program’s Global Youth Leadership Campaign and serving as a mentor to the Roots & Shoots National Youth Leadership Council. Biddle represents hundreds of thousands of members in more than 120 countries who take part in youth-led service projects to make positive change happen in their communities and who work every day to raise awareness about the issues affect people, animals and the environment we all share.
