Roots & Shoots Native Americas Project Wins $50,000 from Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green

We are proud to announce that Roots & Shoots Native Americas project has come in 2nd place in the Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green campaign! Thanks to the many supporters who voted for Roots & Shoots over the last few weeks to keep us in the top three!

Since 2006, Roots & Shoots has been working with the Oglala Lakota Tribe on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. The Roots & Shoots Native Americas project works with the entire Pine Ridge community planting community gardens, doing Roots & Shoots projects and learning about traditional practices. You can learn more about the project from our recent web chat with Patricia Hammond, Pine Ridge Field Coordinator. As Field Coordinator, Patricia works to guide the youth of the Pine Ridge area in developing new Roots & Shoots group projects that positively impact the people, animals, and the environment as well as to recruit and train adults interested in assisting youth with the local programs.

Disney’s Friends for Change distributed a total of $250,000 to the participants in the Project Green campaign and Roots & Shoots will use their $50,000 to help address the social and environmental issues afflicting the community. They will continue to create clean, green community spaces; promote healthy, sustainable lifestyles and work with the residents to preserve, restore, and create natural and cultural resources on the reservation.

Thank you to everyone who voted week after week and posted to Twitter, Facebook and all your friends! We couldn’t have done it without you!
