Tragedy has struck Tchimpounga Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Center in the Republic of Congo. A grass fire two kilometers away spread out of control and swept across the savannah to the sanctuary … which is home to more than 150 rescued chimpanzees.
As flames engulfed their enclosures, the chimpanzees fled to the forest trying to escape, while the sanctuary staff fought to control the blaze and bring all of the chimps to safety.
Thanks to the quick action of the staff, no chimpanzees were harmed in the fire. But sadly, many chimpanzee enclosures were completely destroyed, along with other critically important facilities and resources at the center.
